The Louvre Museum is one of the oldest in the world as it has been open for almost 2.5 centuries and is considered one of the most popular, with 10 million visitors every year. Over 35,000 works of art are on display in the museum’s grand halls, accounting for just 8% of the works owned by the Louvre.<\/p>\n

Highlights: Don’t miss the Aphrodite of Milos, the Victory of Samothrace and Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa.<\/p>\n

British Museum, London – England<\/strong><\/p>\n

“Rivals” the Louvre Museum in antiquity, counting more than 260 years of operation. The British Museum has 8 million exhibits from every continent on the planet, telling the story of humanity from its beginnings to the present day, admired by nearly 6 million visitors a year.<\/p>\n

Highlights: The Elgin Marbles from the Parthenon and the sixth Caryatid, the Egyptian antiquities with the Rosetta Stone (196 BC) and parts of two “wonders of the world”, the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus and the Temple of Artemis in Ephesus.<\/p>\n

Museum of Prado, Madrid – Spain<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Museo de Prado recently celebrated its 200th anniversary and is considered one of the most popular in the art world, welcoming 3 million visitors each year and 10 million digital ones via the Internet. It possesses sculptures of inestimable historicity and value estimated at 700 and 8,600 paintings dating from the 14th century to the early 19th century, giving the museum international prestige.<\/p>\n

Highlights: The museum building itself is considered one of the highlights, designed in 1785 by architect Juan de Villanueva. It is worth admiring the most famous work on display, Velazquez’s Las Meninas. Don’t miss masterpieces of Spanish art, such as Goya’s El dos de mayo and El tres de mayo.<\/p>\n

Uffizi, Florence – Italy<\/strong><\/p>\n

One of the oldest museum-art galleries in the world, the Galleria degli Uffizi has been housed in Florence’s Uffizi Palace since as early as 1765. The gallery’s rooms display works by famous Italian painters from the 13th to the 18th century and is famous for its unique collections of Renaissance art. Visitors each year reach 1 million, ranking 20th among the most visited museums in the world.<\/p>\n

Highlights: Seize the opportunity to see Botticelli’s Birth of Venus up close. Don’t miss Da Vinci’s The Adoration of the Magi, Michelangelo’s Doni Tondo and Raphael’s Madonna del cardellino.<\/p>\n

Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam – Netherlands<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Rijksmuseum, the historic museum of the Netherlands, has been ‘alive’ for 200 years and exhibits 8,000 art and history objects from the period 1200 to 2000, from its collection of 1 million objects. The Rijksmuseum (pronounced: Rijksmuseum) is visited by more than 2.5 million visitors every year to admire masterpieces by Rembrandt, Frans Hals and Johannes Vermeer.<\/p>\n

Highlights: Look for Rembrandt’s The Night Watch among the 2,000 paintings that adorn the museum’s halls. In addition to Rembrandt’s works, you have the chance to see masterpieces with the famous signatures of Vermeer, Jan Steen, Jacob Isaakszoon van Ruisdael and Frans Hals.<\/p>\n

Acropolis Museum, Athens – Greece<\/strong><\/p>\n

The new Acropolis Museum is a continuation of the old museum founded on the Rock southeast of the Parthenon in 1865. The new museum has graced the heart of the capital since 2009 and attracts millions of visitors from every corner of the globe – who reached 6 million people in 2019. The new Acropolis Museum building houses the finds from the sacred rock of the Acropolis and its subterranean rock, as well as collections spanning a broad period of time, from Mycenaean times to Roman and Early Christian Athens. In 2013, the British newspaper “Sunday Times” ranked the Acropolis Museum 3rd in its list of the 50 best museums in the world.<\/p>\n

Highlights: Observe up close 5 of the 6 famous Caryatids, the original daughters that supported the terrace of the Erechtheion (temple on the north side of the Acropolis) and look for the bust of Alexander the Great, estimated to have been created in 338 BC. At the top level of the museum, take time to tour the Parthenon Hall, where all the surviving sculptures of the monument are on display.<\/p>\n

Guggenheim Museum, Bilbao – Spain<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, Spain, is in itself a magnificent work of modern architecture well worth a visit. The futuristic building of the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (designed by architect Frank Gehry) opened in 1997 and houses works by Mark Rothko, Jeff Koons, Richard Serra and other famous artists. The Guggenheim Museum is one of Europe’s leading museums, visited by 1.2 million people per year (2019 figures – pre-pandemic).<\/p>\n

Highlights: in addition to the museum building, which is a landmark in Bilbao, the masterpieces of the Thannhauser collection, Jeff Koons’ Tulips, Andy Warhol’s Shadows and Maman in the museum’s courtyard, the giant spider by French sculptor Louise Bourgeois, are worth admiring.<\/p>\n
